The Chief of Defence Force (CDF) is responsible to the Minister of Defence for carrying out the functions and duties of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), the general conduct of the NZDF, and the efficient, effective and economical management of the activities and resources of the NZDF.

Applications are being sought from one and two-star officers with experience working at a senior level in the NZDF environment, who possess a thorough understanding of the current operating environment in the sector, and an ability to work effectively at the political interface. In addition, they will demonstrate their credibility to influence and engage with defence leaders (both nationally and internationally) and public service agencies to advance the Government’s strategic defence priorities.

The successful candidate must be able to create and sustain a unifying culture promoting enthusiasm and pride in the NZDF’s vision and be committed to building, sustaining and deepening culture and ethos, with respect to retention and attrition.

The CDF must have the ability to build and maintain an effective relationship with the Secretary of Defence to ensure that the Ministry of Defence and the NZDF work constructively to achieve results.  The CDF will be expected to build the capability of NZDF to ensure fiscally responsible and sustainable investments are made.

We are looking for a leader who has experience in the following areas: system leadership, context management, sector experience and organisational leadership. More information on the key leadership dimensions of this role can be found in the position description.
