Kia ora koutou katoa,

As Auckland opens its borders and everyone starts to head off on summer break, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge what an incredibly big and challenging year it has been for the Public Service.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose new challenges and create unpredictability, but I for one am reassured that the Public Service remains in front of it all. I am incredibly proud of the way public servants have stepped up this year, yet again, and continued to deliver for New Zealanders. And I know that will continue to be the case.

COVID-19 has given New Zealanders a look behind the curtain of the Public Service to see first-hand the work we do. I’m sure they appreciate that, as I certainly do.

So to each of you who works in public service, let me just say thank you so very much for your hard work and selfless service. Kei te mihi ake mō ngā kaha i whakapoua | Thank you for your contribution everyone. Your service really does make all the difference.

COVID-19 will continue to be a feature in our lives for some time to come, and 2022 promises to be another big year. We have a sizeable Government work programme to deliver, and New Zealanders will continue to expect us to deliver the services they rely on. And we will.

But for now, you all thoroughly deserve a break and time to unwind. While many of you will be working through parts of the summer holiday, on call, or staying close to your phones, I hope each of you gets a decent break to relax with family, friends and loved ones.

Thank you so much for your service. Meri Kirihimete me ngā mihi mō te Tau Hou.
