Kei aku nui, kei aku rahi, tēnā rā koutou katoa.

Kua tae anō tātou ki Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, ā, i tēnei tau, tērā ētahi tohu nui mō te reo Māori hei tirohanga whakamuri mā tātou.

Tūturu, he tohu nui, he whakapānga nui hoki ō ēnei tūāhua katoa.

Ināianei he kaha kē atu tōna kitea, tōna whakamahia, ā, kei whea mai!

He kaupapa ā Te Kawa Mataaho mō Te Wiki o te reo Māori ā, he rawe te kite i te piki haeretanga o tō mātou kaha i ia tau. Ka tū anō The Māori Language Moment i tēnei rā me taku whakahau i a koutou katoa ki te whai wāhi atu ki ngā tūāhua i tēnei wiki.

Karawhiua! Kia kaha te reo Māori!

Kia kaha te reo Māori!

Kei aku nui, kei aku rahi, tēnā rā koutou katoa.

It’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and this year we have a number of signficant te reo Māori milestones to look back on.

When the Public Service Act 2020 was enacted it set out the role of the Public Service in supporting the Crown’s relationships with Māori. Building our capability and supporting the use of te reo Māori in our workplaces helps us to do that.

Te Taunaki Public Service Census found that 65% of public servants said their agency encouraged the use of te reo Māori. This number is increasing and with it the capability of the entire Public Service.

Some of the important anniversaries being commemorated this year include 50 years since the Māori Language Petition was submitted to parliament, 35 years since te reo Māori became an official language of Aotearoa, 35 years since Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori was created and the 40-year anniversary of kōhanga reo.

These events have made a significant impact.

When I joined the Public Service many years ago, in stark contrast to today, te reo Māori was rarely used in the workplace. Now we see te reo Māori a lot more and that’s encouraging.

Te Kawa Mataaho has a programme of events for Te Wiki o te reo Māori and it’s great to see that each year we grow our capabilty.  The Māori Language Moment is happening today and I encourage you all to take part in the events this week.

Karawhiua! Kia kaha te reo Māori!
